NY Times Magazine and Esperanza Spalding

Finally, a great example of how to represent natural hair in the media! The NY Times magazine featured Esperanza Spalding on the cover, rocking a massive afro.

The accompanying photo spread is called Nightie Aphrodites: How to pull off a heartbreakingly romantic evening gown? Just Use Your Head.

It features celebrities (i.e. Corrinne Bailey Rae, Solange Knowles, and Les Nubians) rocking big beautiful natural hair.

See the photo spread here.

If you’re a natural fashionista, you’ll appreciate both the fashion and the hair.

But let me ask this question. Could you “pull off” an afro in an evening gown?

  1. I’m not sure I could pull off an afro with an evening gown. When I first went natural, I was really lazy. So I wore afros, afro puffs, and twists. Now, I try to do more with my hair and would probably try to do some type of fancy updo with my natural hair for an elegant look.
