Only one star can put it all together. And that recognizable, red star is the symbol of Macy’s. Rowland Hussey Macy opened the first store at the corner of 14th Street and 6th Avenue in New York City in 1858. Why the red star, you wonder? For Macy’s founder, the star represented success and was a reminder of his days as a sailor.
Enough with the history lesson! These advertisements are part of Macy’s Only One Star campaign and appeared in Essence magazine. The model with natural hair is wearing dresses from Tahari ASL and Calvin Klein.
For their fall campaign, Macy’s created several 15 to 60 second spots in a “retailality comedy” called “What’s in Store?”
The funny commercials feature several stars, such as I.N.C. spokesmodel Camila Alves, Justin Bieber, Sean “Diddy” Combs, celebrity and Macy’s Culinary Council chef Marcus Samuelsson, Carlos Santana, Martha Stewart, Taylor Swift and Donald Trump, and Florence Henderson. The series also feature Harold, a new store manager who is ready to take the helm from Susan (played by Florence Henderson). In the first episode “Dream”, Harold arrives at the store from Twin Falls, ID and begins daydreaming about his new career. The campaign is designed to celebrate the magic of Macy’s. “With What’s in Store?, we are taking the next step in bringing the magic of Macy’s closer to audiences everywhere as we collectively share in the remarkable and hilarious everyday situations that Harold and other store employees experience at the World’s Largest Store,” said Martine Reardon, Macy’s chief marketing officer.
